What Will You Expect in a PRK Eye Surgery?

Before you even think of undergoing an eye surgery, you need to go to an ophthalmologist and have your eyes checked. Then, if you are advised to undergo an eye operation, you need to choose an experienced PRK surgeon. The surgeon will meet with you to discuss your medical history and condition. He will them thoroughly examine your eyes to determine if they are ready to endure an operation. An evaluation of the following will take place:

• The size of your eye’s pupils
• The degree of moistness in your eyes. This is important so that the surgeon may determine beforehand if there is risk of having dry eyes after the surgery and that this complication might be treated immediately.
• Determining the curvature of your cornea is another procedure that is included in the initial examination. A corneal mapping device is used to measure the curves of the eye surface.
• The thickness of your cornea will also be measured.

When the operation is performed, the patient is awake and possibly, the surgeon might give him a mild sedative in order for the patient to relax. Numbing eye drops are placed on his eyes. So that the patient’s eyes will be opened during the entire operation, a lid speculum is used to open the eyelids. Once the patient’s eye is in position, the surgeon directs the excimer laser to do its job.

The laser then removes microscopic tissues on the patient’s eye thereby reshaping the eye’s cornea. After the operation, the surgeon places a bandage contact lens, on the operated eye to help in the healing of the cornea. Once the epithelial cells grow back, the bandage can now be removed.

After the operation, the doctor will ask you to rest for a few minutes. Your surgeon will give you a list of medicines to intake in order to minimize the swelling of your eyes, hasten the healing of the cells and to reduce discomforts. The prescription may include antibiotics and anti inflammatory and pain medicines.
For optimum vision, it is necessary to follow the instructions of the doctor. You should also attend the follow up appointments set by your doctor. This way, the after effects of the operation will be monitored accordingly.
